The MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta winded down its 2019 events calendar on November 14, with a fireside chat from tech icon and serial entrepreneur, Bill Nussey. The event, which was hosted at Georgia Tech’s Advanced Technology Development Center, was attended by professionals, both within and outside of the technology sector, who came to hear Bill share his professional story and thoughts on why he believes clean energy is one of the biggest business opportunities in history.
The chat, which was led by Nelson Chu, Managing Director at Kinetic Ventures, focused around Bill’s distinguished career in technology and his path as a successful entrepreneur. “Necessity of luck,” is what Bill modestly shared regarding his many successes, but noted that he has always been driven by a sense of responsibility to be a part of something that matters to the world and has immediate social impact; as he puts it, “you need to find your mission.”
When asked how to develop or find the next big thing, Bill stated that he has always looked for disruption, in particular digital disruption. “Usually, these industries aren’t even aware that they need whatever solutions are headed their way. The electric industry is that way now, which drove me towards clean energy.”
Clean energy is where Bill spends most of his time these days, as the CEO and co-founder of Solar Inventions and as the founder of the Freeing Energy Project, whose mission is to accelerate the shift to cleaner and cheaper energy.
Best pieces of advice for entrepreneurs or professionals alike? “Manage outcomes, not processes. Hire slow and fire fast. Celebrate wins. Show up early. Surround yourself with people who will push you and share similar values. Never stop learning,” said Nussey.
